3. IPong Table Tennis Robot Review

i. IPong Expert Table Tennis Robot

The low price of IPong Expert Table Tennis Robot is a very good reason to buy such a device for beginners. Just $30, less than many table tennis paddles. The battery as a power source and low weight & low dimensions make IPong Expert easy portable

When these properties considered, I think It is a good decision to buy it if you are a beginner. Now let me switch to the weak points, the points make IPong Expert not even an option for an advanced player.

- What are the weak points of IPong Expert?

  • No Remote Control which makes you run to the other side of the table to hit the first ball.
  • Ball Capacity of 20 which limits your journey to hit the balls with 40 seconds. After 40 seconds you need to pick the balls, place them to IPong Expert, click the on/off button and run to the other side of the table again.
  • Lack of features like spin, ball frequency, and oscillation.
  • The high trajectory of the balls, an advantage for a beginner, a disadvantage for an advanced player.
  • Two balls at once. Yes, sometimes IPong Expert sends two balls at one shot.

Come on, do not expect too much from a $30 table tennis robot. If you do expect more, proceed to the next table tennis robot.

ii. IPong Topspin Table Tennis Robot

IPong Topspin table tennis robot has a low price, too which gives another reason to buy such a device for beginners. Just $38, less than many table tennis paddles again. The battery as a power source and low weight & low dimensions make IPong Topspin easy portable just like IPong Expert.

With the below advantages IPong Topspin is a good decision to buy it if you are a beginner, but it is again not an option for an advanced player.

- What are the strengths of IPong Topspin? (over IPong Expert)

  • Wired Remote Control to control power on/off and topspin on/off.
  • Ball Capacity of 100 functionality of IPong Topspin let you have more time to enjoy. 20 balls in IPong Expert was too short.
  • Adjustable feature of topspin(on/off) and ball frequency(12 to 70) in IPong Topspin, is a plus for even a beginner to practice.
  • Improved ball trajectory gives natural playing feeling.

- What are the weak points of IPong Topspin?

  • Lack of features. There is no backspin and oscillation functionality. And topspin functionality is not adjustable in IPong Topspin.
  • Remote Control is not wireless. And there is no digital display.

iii. IPong V100 Table Tennis Robot

IPong V100 table tennis robot is the previous version of IPong V200 and IPong V300. Probably you will not be able to find the product in the market, as V200 and V300 launched.

IPong V100 in about $60 and it is similar to IPong topspin with improved quality.

iv. IPong Original Table Tennis Robot

IPong Original table tennis robot is a very good beginning point for advanced table tennis players as it has adjustable features such as topspin, backspin, and speed. IPong Original is about $95 and has cordless electric.

Below you can find the strengths and weak points of  IPong Original.

- What are the strengths of IPong Original? (over IPong Topspin)

  • Wired Remote Control has topspin, backspin and frequency control added to power and topspin controls.
  • Adjustable features of topspin speed and backspin speed added to frequency feature.

- What are the weak points of IPong Original?

  • No side-to-side Oscillation.
  • Remote Control is not wireless. And there is no digital display.

Cordless electric is an advantage for a durable power source, whereas batteries give flexibility. So you should place it for an advantage or disadvantage yourself for your case.

v. IPong V200 Table Tennis Robot

IPong V200 is a very good choice for advanced players as it has adjustable topspin, backspin and frequency controls and it is about $90.

IPong V200 is the previous version of IPong V300.

- What are the strengths of IPong V200? (over IPong Original)

  • Wireless Remote has power, topspin, backspin and frequency controls.
  • Digital Display shows spin and frequency.

- What are the weak points of IPong V200?

  • No side-to-side Oscillation.

vi. IPong PRO Table Tennis Robot

IPong Pro table tennis robot has all functionalities of IPong series and it is $115.

IPong Pro has also an updated software and quality to ensure consistency and accuracy.

- What are the strengths of IPong PRO? (over IPong V200)

  • Side-to-side Oscillation which is on the remote control, too.

- What are the weak points of IPong PRO?

  • Wired Remote and no digital display

vii. IPong V300 Table Tennis Robot

IPong V300 table tennis robot is the most advanced robot of IPong and is $130.

IPong V300 has key improvements in the motor and shooting wheels which improve its accuracy and consistency, stronger ball launch with increased spin, quieter operation and increased long-term performance. The iPong V300 also features a new feeder disc design that prevents ball jams.

In 2018 IPONG V300 is being replaced with a new brand IPONG Trainer Motion. The functionality is the same, but IPONG Trainer Motion has a new design.

- What are the strengths of IPong V300? (over IPong PRO)

  • Wireless Remote and digital display

4. IPong Table Tennis Robot Mechanism & Controls

The IPong V300 table tennis robot uses an upper wheel and lower wheel to control the ball spin, speed, and trajectory.

  • When the upper wheel spins faster than the lower wheel, topspin is generated.
  • When the lower wheel spins faster than the upper wheel, backspin is generated.
  • When both wheels are spinning at the same speed, the ball is traveling across the table with no spin.

Other IPong table tennis robots have different mechanisms. For example, IPong Topspin does not have the second wheel and IPong Expert have none of the wheels. I will write the mechanism and controls of IPong V300 as it is the most complex one.

You should start with the iPong in pause mode. Using the plus and minus buttons, you can adjust each setting accordingly.

Topspin Settings

For a stronger topspin, increase the Topspin setting to your preference. For a topspin ball, you should adjust topspin control between 5 – 7 and backspin control between 2 – 4. In the picture:

  • Frequency: “1”
  • Oscillation: “0”
  • Topspin: “3”
  • Backspin: “1”

If the balls are not going over the net, increase the Backspin setting incrementally and test until the balls start going over the net again.

Backspin Settings

For a stronger backspin, increase the Backspin setting to your preference. For a backspin ball, you should adjust topspin control between 2 – 4 and backspin control between 5 – 7. In the picture:

  • Frequency: “1”
  • Oscillation: “0”
  • Topspin: “1”
  • Backspin: “3”

If the balls are going off the table, decrease the Backspin setting incrementally and test until the balls start hitting the table again.

Frequency Settings

Frequency is the rate at which table tennis balls shoot out of the iPong. The higher the Frequency setting, the greater the number of balls shoot out per minute. “1” is the lowest frequency while “8” is the highest frequency.

Oscillation (Side-To-Side) Settings

Oscillation is the setting used for shooting balls to random locations on the table. The higher the Oscillation setting, the faster the iPong side-to-side motion. “1” is the slowest oscillation while “8” is the fastest oscillation.

The Memory Function

The iPong V300 has the ability to save your favorite settings. When you have your favorite settings tuned on the iPong V300, press the pause button on the remote, followed by pressing the memory button. When you want to recall your saved setting, make sure you’re in play mode and press the memory button. You’ll notice that the iPong V300 changes to your saved settings. To change your saved settings, repeat steps 1 and 2 above.

5. Ball, Ball Catcher, Tilt Stand - must-haves

Table tennis robots bring a few more tools to consider buying.

  • Ball is the first one. As robot capacity is huge (20-100), you need more balls, considering some of them will be scrapped over time.
  • Ball Catcher is the second one. If you do not want to collect the balls one by one from different sides of the room, you should consider buying a ball catcher too.
  • Tilt Stand is the third one. I am not sure this is a must-have. The iPong Tilt Stand is a multi-tiered iPong elevation tool, designed to change ball trajectory and increase shot variation. Three heights are available: 9mm,17mm, or 26mm.

The tilt stand is especially useful when setting the iPong to shoot slow balls or fast backspin balls that otherwise might NOT go over the net. A bit of experimentation will be required. With the tilt stand on the front of the iPong, go up in elevation if balls go into the net. And go down in elevation if balls go off the table.

  • For slower balls, position iPong near the center of the table. Start with tilt stand in lowest position, and adjust upward as needed.
  • For fast backspin balls, position iPong near the end of the table. Start with tilt stand in highest position, and adjust downward as needed.
  • Advanced: Place tilt stand on the rear of iPong. Use for very fast topspin balls. Position iPong near the end of the table - OR in the middle of the table! Start in the lowest position, and adjust upward as needed.

6. Conclusion

As this is a product review, the conclusion must cover the question “Which IPong table tennis robot to buy?”, right? I will summarize my opinions in here. Please do not hesitate to give your comments below.

If you are a beginner or new in table tennis I suggest you eliminate IPong Expert and get an IPong Topspin if you want to keep your budget, but buy an IPong table tennis robot. The high trajectory and low ball capacity are the main reasons for eliminating IPong Expert. IPong Topspeed price is very near to IPong Expert, but trajectory, ball capacity, topspin features are improved which makes great difference.

If you are an advanced player, or you have a budget to spend for an IPong table tennis robot, then I suggest you eliminate IPong v100 and get an IPong Original or V200 or PRO or V300. Choose any of them according to your budget. Why? Because I think wired / wireless remote or digital display is not important for me. Only feature difference is Oscillation, and it may even have cons. As it is a moving part, there can be issues in the future. So if you do not want to spend more money get an IPong Original.

FAQ & Troubleshooting Tips

After each use of the iPong, you should remove the power adaptor. You should clean the balls used in the iPong after several uses (Balls will collect dust on the surface, and this might affect the function of the iPong) and wipe the iPong after several uses, and put it back into the box (or a bag) to avoid collecting dust.

You should clean the wheels of iPong often with a clean cloth with water, or alcohol, and wipe the wheels a few times by running the cloth along the surface of the wheel.

You should clean the motor under the agitator. First, disassemble the horn, then pull the agitator straight up lightly, to remove the agitator. You will see dust or hair around the motor. Carefully remove with a clean cloth.

Be sure to visit IPong website at www.ipong.net and register your iPong robot when you purchase it to activate your warranty. If your problem persists, fill out the support form on IPong website.

Remember that when the Topspin and Backspin settings are the same, no spin is generated on the ball.

Check the Settings Customization in the beginning of the user guide.

Be sure you are using the correct sized balls. iPong robots work only with 40mm table tennis balls, and work best with plastic table tennis balls.

Be sure you are using the correct sized balls. iPong robots work only with 40mm table tennis balls, and work best with plastic table tennis balls.

Try moving the iPong further back, closer to the edge of the table. Decrease the Backspin setting and/or increase the Topspin setting
incrementally and test until the balls start hitting the table again.

Remove some of the balls from the top assembly. Overloading the top with balls may be too heavy for the agitator to rotate.

Be sure you are using the correct sized balls. iPong robots work only with 40mm table tennis balls, and work best with plastic table tennis balls.

The maximum ball capacity of the top assembly is 100 balls. 60-100 table tennis balls is the recommended amount.

If the round gap on the agitator stops directly above the ball entry hole, multiple balls could enter into the core engine at once and stall. To prevent this, avoid turning the iPong off with the ball entry hole and agitator gap aligned.

This is often caused by the Topspin and/or Backspin settings starting at “0” when first turning on the iPong. Turn off the iPong and remove all balls from the core engine and top assembly. Let the iPong run empty, making sure that the Topspin and Backspin settings are set to “1” or higher. Then, reload the balls while the iPong is running.

Unplug the iPong. Manually reach in and fish the ball out. You can also tip the unit upside down and shake it gently to get the ball to fall out.

If you have an iPONG Topspin, check the batteries. If you have the iPong Original or iPong Pro, check to see that the A/C adaptor is plugged in all the way.
